How to Search the Bertie County Court Docket
Start your Bertie County court docket search at the North Carolina eCourts Portal. Choose Smart Search. Then enter the most precise identifier you have. That could be a case number, citation number, or party name. Portal is the statewide system covering Bertie cases, not a separate county database. Its public Case Summary is also known as the Register of Actions. It assembles the case timeline for public case types.
Write down the case number once you find it. Note whether the case sits in Superior Court, District Court, or with the clerk. From there, read Case Events in date order and open Hearings separately for the current setting. A judgment-index hit can help you locate a number. Still, Smart Search remains the route back to the fuller public Case Summary. For anything older, unavailable, or needing certification, contact the Bertie County Clerk of Superior Court. The Portal screen is not the last word.
New filings can show up within minutes of an upload to Odyssey. Speed depends on workload and processing. That speed helps with a fresh Bertie court docket check. It does not promise everything will appear online. A pending filing, a restricted document, or a clerk-certified copy may not show. When a difference arises, call the clerk. Have the case number and the date of the search in hand.
- Open Portal and choose Smart Search.
- Search by a precise party name, citation number, or case number.
- Use Advanced Filtering Options to narrow the Bertie County court docket by location, party, case type, status, or filing-date range.
- Open the right Case Summary and compare its Case Events with its Hearings panel.
- Use Search Hearings or the Bertie calendar link for a current date, then ask the clerk for an official copy when needed.
Bertie Portal Search Fields
Smart Search offers more routes than a plain name check. Official Portal training lists party name, record number, and citation number as searchable criteria. Attorney name or bar number, business name, case cross-reference number, and nickname are searchable too. You do not need to register to search public Bertie court docket information. An account simply saves public cases to My Cases. It does not unlock restricted material. Use Smart Search to pin down the Bertie case. Make any request to the Bertie clerk after that.
| Portal field | Use for a Bertie search | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Search Criteria | Enter a party name or number. | Use the exact case number when it is known. |
| Filter by Search Type | Choose attorney, business, citation, cross-reference, or nickname when appropriate. | Selecting the wrong search type can hide a match. |
| Party and case filters | Narrow by date of birth, case type, status, and filing-date range. | Only documented public criteria appear in the training material. |
| Location options | Focus a statewide result on the Bertie court route. | Portal does not replace clerk confirmation. |
Portal training resources explain the public search tools.
File & Serve is the separate filing system for parties and attorneys. It is not the public Bertie court docket viewer.
Note: A failed search usually means you need a different search type or a more exact identifier. It does not mean no court case exists.
What a Bertie County Court Docket Shows
A public Bertie County court docket is a case-level record. It is not a single date or a charge label. Portal labels the overview a Case Summary or Register of Actions. The chronological activity list is called Case Events. Some panels appear only under certain conditions. So a missing panel does not establish that a case lacks a hearing, financial entry, or disposition. Read what is displayed. Then verify material facts with the clerk, who holds the official Bertie court file.
| Case number | The Enterprise Justice identifier that connects the Bertie case to its court and events. |
|---|---|
| Party information | Role-linked parties when public; Portal search returns exclude victims. |
| Case Events | Dated actions such as filings, notices, motions, orders, and other timeline entries. |
| Hearings | Current setting information when the case has hearing data. |
| Assignment information | Court or judicial assignment information when available. |
| Disposition and financials | Outcome or financial panels when the case contains that information. |
North Carolina’s court-structure overview explains the statewide hierarchy serving Bertie.
The table helps you pick the right Bertie court docket route. That matters before a name search floods you with confusing statewide results.
Bertie Court Number Format
A full Enterprise Justice case number has four parts. These are a two-digit year, case-type letters, a six-digit sequence, and a three-digit county identifier. The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts offers 21CR000003-910 as its format example. Copy every part of the number from your actual Bertie result. The example only describes the state format. It is not a Bertie case number to reuse.
- Case Event
- A dated action recorded in the Portal timeline.
- Hearing
- A scheduled court event with location and time information when shown.
- Disposition
- An outcome entry or panel, not merely a pending charge or claim.
- Continuance
- A postponement that should be confirmed through an order and a replacement hearing.
Wildcard rules matter too. A case-number wildcard needs at least four characters followed by an asterisk. A person search needs at least three last-name characters plus an asterisk, and at least one first-name character plus an asterisk.
For a business name containing a comma, the Portal FAQ says to put a wildcard at the comma and enter nothing after it. Narrow a broad result using the documented party, location, and case criteria. Do not assume a similar name belongs to the right Bertie court docket.
Which Bertie County Courts Keep Dockets
Bertie is part of North Carolina's unified, state-operated court system. The Bertie County Clerk of Superior Court keeps records for both Superior and District Court. The courthouse uses one public Portal path for the whole county. Even so, court level and case type still determine which calendar, office, and procedure apply. Bertie sits in Superior Court District 7B and District Court District 7.
| Court | Docket Covers | Where to Search |
|---|---|---|
| Superior Court | Felonies, major civil matters, claims over $25,000, and certain appeals. | Portal Smart Search, the Bertie clerk, and the relevant civil or criminal calendar. |
| District Court | Misdemeanors, traffic, family matters, and civil cases at or below $25,000. | Portal Smart Search or Search Hearings, then the Bertie clerk. |
| Magistrate and small claims | Small claims and defined criminal-process functions in the District Court Division. | Portal or the clerk; the published magistrate line is (252) 794-5328. |
| Clerk matters | Estates, probate, and nonconfidential special proceedings. | The clerk and Portal’s Estates or Special Proceedings filters. |
Bertie eCourts Portal Change
Bertie joined eCourts on April 28, 2025. That change brought Portal, Enterprise Justice, and File & Serve into the county's working court paths. One record may hold modern online case events. Older paper-era material can sit alongside them. The state's Track 8 notices also carried a warning. Legacy systems shifted to inquiry-only use while migration was underway.
Older activity can look odd after conversion. Portal guidance notes that imported historic events can carry a 12:00 a.m. timestamp. That timestamp is system metadata. It is not proof that a Bertie hearing began at midnight. Read it beside the event label, the Hearings panel, and any later order or notice.
The official eCourts overview describes the statewide platform serving Bertie.
For Bertie court docket research, the new Portal route can show a public timeline. The clerk remains essential for official, paper, or certified records.
Finding Bertie County Court Dates
Need to know when a Bertie case is set? Two tools answer that question. Search Hearings inside the Portal is the current-setting route, and it accepts a case number, a party or business name, an attorney name or bar number, a judicial officer, or a courtroom. Old notices can mislead. A prior docket calendar may show a setting that has since moved.
Bertie also posts separate Bertie civil calendars and Bertie criminal calendars. Civil and criminal settings live on different lists. Match the right calendar against the Portal result. Then call the clerk about anything unclear or changed. The Bertie County court calendar page explains the full sequence in more depth.
Bertie Civil and Criminal Calendars
Bertie publishes two official calendar paths because the court work behind them differs. Civil matters belong on the civil route. Criminal matters belong on the criminal route. A calendar shows the current listing, nothing more. Later Case Events still matter. A notice of hearing, a motion to continue, and an order can disagree, and a docket reader has to catch that.
No setting online? Call the clerk at (252) 794-6800. Bertie also publishes district-wide judge-office contacts: (252) 358-7120 for Superior Court and (252) 358-7080 for District Court. A phone call verifies a setting; it does not make an old notice binding.
The Bertie County Judicial Branch page lists both calendars plus the Portal route.
A continuance request is not a new date. Watch for a later order plus a fresh Hearing entry, and confirm with the clerk when the date matters.
Current-setting rule: Check Search Hearings, the matching Bertie calendar, and the clerk or court office before relying on an older paper notice.
Public Access to Bertie County Dockets
North Carolina law keeps the clerk's records, files, dockets, and indexes open for public inspection unless another law restricts them. In Bertie County that access works three ways. The clerk provides it during regular office hours. Public self-service terminals sit in clerk offices. Authorized remote access is a third route. None of this turns confidential material into a Portal result.
Key Rules:
G.S. 7A-109 - requires clerk recordkeeping and provides the public-inspection framework for court records.
G.S. 132-6 - addresses inspection and copies of public records from the custodian.
G.S. 132-6.2 - permits electronic availability but does not require a custodian to create a new record.
G.S. 7A-308 - sets statutory clerk charges for services such as copies and certificates.
Bertie Portal Limits and Records
Portal is handy but limited. Its own FAQ says it is not the official court record. Public users get case information and records for public case types. Sealed records never appear online. Some categories need elevated legal authority: unreturned criminal warrants, juvenile records, protective-order records, and confidential special proceedings. Registering for a standard account changes none of that.
Ask the clerk about a restricted file. The clerk cannot give legal advice on expunction eligibility or other remedies. A sealed, expunged, or restricted record stays hidden wherever you search. Another county will not reveal it. Neither will an old calendar or a public terminal. Visibility follows the case category and the viewer's legal authority.
The official Portal entry point opens the public search service.
A no-match message has several causes. The search terms may be off. So might the case category. Restricted files, older paper records, and non-public matters all return nothing. The practical fallback is a precise request to the Bertie clerk, not an attempt to bypass an access rule. Expunction, sealing, and confidentiality rules control visibility even when a case once appeared in a public court docket.
The Bertie County Clerk and Docket Records
The elected Bertie County Clerk of Superior Court keeps the court records for both Superior and District Court. The clerk also serves as probate judge. That office is the record's home. Start with Smart Search to find a case number. Certified copies are a clerk job. So are paper-era files, documents Portal will not display, and questions about the actual record. Portal offers remote public viewing, but the clerk remains the statutory custodian.

Mail goes to PO Box 370, Windsor, NC 27983. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The statewide court-records service lists public self-service terminals in clerk offices across the state. It makes no promise about a particular Bertie terminal location. It also makes no promise about a staff-search procedure.
Bertie Courthouse Record Access
The Bertie County Courthouse in Windsor does double duty. It is the county's records counter and a historic landmark. The state register listed it on May 10, 1979. Everyone comes here. Residents of every Bertie town use the same state court and clerk route, since the county documents no separate criminal-justice center, civil annex, or town docket office.
The old building anchors a modern docket route. The official Bertie courthouse page provides the building and contact details.
History aside, the record route is modern. Portal handles public case information, Search Hearings covers a current setting, and the clerk supplies the official file or a certified copy.
Bertie Clerk Copy Charges
When the Bertie clerk prepares a copy of a court record, statutory charges set the price.
Bertie publishes no separate local fee sheet for copies. Ask the clerk to price a request before ordering it. The statewide clerk-fee statute governs the amounts. No statute promises a fixed total for any particular Bertie case.
One caution is worth knowing. A Portal printout is not a certified clerk copy. And a request for an administrative Judicial Branch record is not a request for a court case file.
| Clerk service | Statutory amount |
|---|---|
| Certificate under seal | $3.00 |
| Exemplification of records | $10.00 |
| First page of each prepared copy | $2.00 |
| Each additional copy page or fraction | $0.25 |
| Criminal record search | $25.00, subject to statutory exceptions |
The governing amounts sit in G.S. 7A-308, the clerk-fee schedule. Before sending payment, ask which service applies, whether the document you need exists in your Bertie case, and how the clerk accepts requests.
Bertie Court Docket Service Area
Every Bertie town shares one Bertie state court path.
The docket route covers a large rural county as well as its incorporated towns. The 2020 Census counted 17,934 residents across 699.18 land square miles. In the state's July 2024 municipal estimates, only 32.8 percent of county residents live inside a municipality.
That spread-out geography makes remote Portal access genuinely useful. Windsor remains the courthouse and records anchor.
The North Carolina Judicial Branch data and statistics page links to a county-filterable Case Statistics Dashboard. It offers verified, date-specific filing and disposition context. Pull the figures you need from the dashboard rather than inferring them from population.
Court Dockets by City in Bertie County

Windsor, Aulander, Lewiston-Woodville, Colerain, and Kelford are the five largest incorporated Bertie towns in the state's July 2024 estimates. Each has its own civic character. But none runs a separate municipal court or town court portal. A town-issued state citation lands with the same Bertie clerk. A county court case takes the same statewide Portal path. The cards ahead offer town-specific routing details without suggesting a local court that does not exist.
